Job Opportunities at ClariNet

Managing Editor

ClariNet, publishers of the ClariNet e.News, the Internet's first and largest electronic news publication -- 1.2 million paid subscribers, tripling annually -- seeks an experienced manager to lead its editorial department. Our editorial staff needs a leader to manage our growth challenges, direct editorial operations, and ensure that many new project goals are met.

The editorial department is responsible for the human element in what we publish. A primary task is classification of wire service news from several disparate sources into subject classifications by adding critical editorial judgement to the results of highly automated, online classification tools. The needs of real-time news updating make this a time-critical operation.

In addition, editors maintain our broad online documentation of products, revise 'scripts' to guide the automated part of our classification process, regularly review and evaluate new content for our electronic news mix, design Web presentation and organization of our news to meet ever-evolving user needs, and maintain active correspondence with readers at a volume, appropriate to the interactive nature of online news. The department will continue to be responsible for processing the news as we move into more complicated layouts into HTML and other formats.

The managing editor's responsibilities will include supervising a staff of 6 plus hiring and training additional staff to meet the operating plan needs, leading the editorial decision-making process, project planning and scheduling for the department's projects, working with other department heads on strategic and operating issues, representing the editorial position in new product planning with the publisher and president, and setting editorial standards and policies in the very dynamic world of online journalism.

Key requirements for this position include editorial management experience, ideally in a technology-oriented, high growth environment. Publications, print or broadcast news, or online media background is preferred.. Internet-savvy managers are especially urged to apply.

Compensation includes salary, benefits and stock option plan participation in our high growth, pre-public Internet company.

ClariNet is an equal-opportunity employer working under an affirmative action plan.
