Laboratories
Modern structural testing laboratories exist for full-scale testing at
Carleton University. The facilities include a strong test floor that
is 11 m x 27 m, with a clear height of 11 m; a strong pit measuring 3
m x 3.7 m x 6.6 m for geotechnical and highway materials testing; a
400,000 lb universal testing machine with auxiliary equipment for load
and displacement control; numerous hydraulic actuators; test frames;
specialized equipment for torsion and impact studies; a wide
selection of measuring devices, such as strain gauges, pressure
transducers, LVDTs, thermocouples and load cells; and several data
aquisition systems for testing structural materials and components.
The concrete laboratory has facilities for casting, curing, and
testing or reinforced concrete members.
The geotechnical laboratories are equipped with computer-controlled
large scale and conventional tri-axial testing equipment and consolidation
testing equipment, as well as facilities for pore water pressure
measurements and model studies of contact stress measurements. The
soil dynamics and highway materials laboratories provide facilities
for studies of the physical properties of soil, stabilized soil,
aggregate and bituminous mixtures.
Computer Facilities
Computer facilities are excellent at Carleton University and are
constantly being upgraded. Computer equipment within the
department comprises a network of Apollo and SUN workstations, some
Apple computers, a network of microcomputers, and an HP9000. Each of
the computer rooms is equipped with laser printers and other
peripherals. The computing centre of the university provides access
to SUN4 workstations.
The software on the various computer systems includes up-to-date
offerings in the fields of statistical analysis, mathematical and
scientific computation, data base management, and word processing.
Specialized engineering software is also available for analysis and
design purposes.
Library Resources
The focus of learning in any university is its library. At Carleton
University, the MacOdrum Library houses more than a million volumes
and almost a million other items that includes an increasing
collection of microfilms, archival material, maps, slides, and other
items. The library also subscribes to a large number of national and
international journals and periodicals.
Additional library resources in the Ottawa region include The
National Library of Canada, The Public Archives of Canada, The Canada
Institute for Scientific and Technical Information, the Library of
Parliament and other specialized government libraries.
The library catalogue is available via telnet.
