In its first-ever ranking of graduate programs in library science, U.S. News & World Report magazine rated the School of Information and Library Studies at the University of Michigan in a tie for second place.

U-M tied with the University of North Carolina with a 4.3 cumulative score. The University of Illinois was first with 4.4 points.

"I'm very pleased with our ranking, given that the School is going through a period of great change," said Dean Daniel E. Atkins. "It's hard to quantify what the impact of such rapid change might be on the subjective ratings made by colleagues in the field."

Ratings were based solely on a reputational survey of faculty and academic administrators.

"I have a lot of respect for the schools that are ranked with us at the top," the dean continued. "But we are perceived as being the international leader in moving to the next generation of library science and a broad array of new professional specializations for the digital information age."

The top 10 schools in the magazine survey (and the scores) are:

1. University of Illinois, 4.4
2. University of Michigan, 4.3
2. University of North Carolina, 4.3
4. Syracuse University, 4.2
5. University of Pittsburgh, 4.1
6. Indiana University, 3.9
7. Rutgers University, 3.9
8. University of Wisconsin, 3.9
9. University of Texas, 3.8
10. Drexel University, 3.7
