TODD & HOLLAND TEA MERCHANTS

The issue is not affording the best teas....

Todd & Holland are merchants of choice, rare loose leaf teas to serious tea drinkers worldwide. Our firmís approach to the tea business reflects its merchant heritage and its dedication to personalized customer relationships. These relationships are founded upon our providing information about and the delivery of excellent loose leaf teas to our valued customers.

A Note about our prices and inventory: The price of our teas reflects their rarity and scarceness. Compared with varietal wines and gourmet coffees our estate teas are very reasonable in cost. Using a very conservative yield of 80 cups of tea per quarter pound, a $40.00 a quarter pound rare tea costs only $.50 per cup. This is less than specialty coffee and far less than vintage wine. Except for our blends, all of our teas are limited in quantity. The nature of stand alone estate and garden teas is limited supply. The best of any agricultural crop is always in limited supply, be it great wine grapes or excellent tea leaves. If we cannot fill your order for a specific tea due to lack of availability, we will notify you and will be happy to recommend one of our other teas of similar type and quality.

Todd & Holland have selected a number of teas to introduce you to one of the most extensive collections of teas in the country. Custom and personal tea blends are also available. Also, please sign up for our Tea Information List so that we may keep you informed of new teas we may receive, as well as other tea-related issues!

Todd & Holland Filter Offerings

We are passionate about the quality of our teas; for you to experience that "perfect cup of tea", it must be brewed properly. Removing the leaves from the tea after an exactly timed infusion is very important. You may simply pour the tea into another pot or remove the leaves. It is generally easier to remove the leaves. We have experimented with various methods and recommend the following:

E01 - Filtropa Tea Filters with Holder High quality paper, free of taste and smell, that allows the tea to be filtered at the proper rate. The bags are very strong when wet. We infuse our green teas many times and have never had a broken bag. The holder is plastic, the paper tea filter fits over it loosely and is clamped tight by a stainless steel half ring that easily widens and narrows to go over the bottom of the plastic holder. The holder easily sits above a cup or a teapot. It comes with 40 paper filters. $8.00

E04 - Filtropa Filters 40 Replacement 40 replacement filters for the above holder. $3.00

E03 - Swiss Gold "Cup Oí Tea" Filter with Cover A cup size 23 carat gold plated filter. It is easy to use and clean. The tea floats loosely in the filter until infusion time is over and then the filter with the wet leaves is raised and can be rested on the reversed cover. To clean, just dump the leaves and rinse the filter under the faucet. This long lasting filter is environmentally friendly. $15.00

E06 - Permanent Tea Filter Same "Cup" Swiss Gold filter as above on a stand. The filter rests in a holder that is attached to a sturdy metal stand nearly 8 inches high. The holder slides vertically to accomodate a cup--down for infusion, up to remove the leaves after brewing, allowing a cup to slide out easily. $18.00 plus $1 additional shipping.

E07 - Glass Mug Weíve tried many glass mugs and like this the best. It is tempered laboratory glass-very delicate, thin, and sturdy. The glass handle has a comfortable curve and stays cool. We feel glass enchances the visual appreciation of tea. Fits nicely into a gift box with stand above. $5.50 plus $1 additional shipping for up to four mugs.

E05 - Swiss Gold "Pot Oí Tea" Filter with Cover A pot size gold plated filter with all the qualities of the "cup of tea", designed to fit most teapots. $20.00

Ceylon, the colonial name of the island of Sri Lanka, is the third largest tea producing area in the world. Ceylon teas offer the serious tea drinker an adventure in subtle differences of taste. Like Darjeeling teas, Ceylon's tea bushes are a hybrid of Assam and Chinese teas. Because Ceylons are often blended with other teas, a true Ceylon tea you select from the list below will likely taste different from Ceylons youíve tasted before. Pure, clear, golden reddish-brown Ceylons are ideal for drinking at lunch or in mid-afternoon.

C134 - Ceylon King Estate Group Dimbula Region OP Choice Due east of the port city of Colombo, this high grown (over 4000 feet) Dimbula region tea produces a full bodied liquor with a classic Ceylon deep golden color. A quality Ceylon tea, with a fruity bouquet, for stand alone enjoyment. $21.52

This is a delicate tea which offers a subtle taste and a very good Ceylon mouth. $22.32

C137 - Ceylon Kenilworth Farm Kandy Region (Small Granular Form) BOP Because of the small granular form of this tea, it brews a strong full bodied Ceylon cup. Darjeelings

Darjeeling teas are grown in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains in the northeast part of India between Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan. Connoisseurs call Darjeeling tea, with its characteristic dryness and muscat overtones, the "Champagne of Teas". A hybrid of Chinese teas from the West and Assams from India, it is in such demand by those who desire its characteristic pungency and astringency that while only ten thousand tons of prized Darjeeling estate tea are grown each year, over forty thousand tons are sold. As a result, few people ever enjoy a cup of 100% Darjeeling estate tea, such as the estate Darjeelings listed below.

D119 - Darjeeling TGBOP (Tippy Golden Broken Orange Pekoe) This is an excellent broken leaf Darjeeling Blend. Visible tips give this Darjeeling blend a mild yet bold flavor while producing the assertive Darjeeling character and aroma. As with all our Darjeelings, this is a serious stand alone tea to be savored and drunk without anything added. $26.40

D121 - Darjeeling Snowview Estate FTGFOP-1 (Fancy Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe) (Astringent) A tea with a strong Darjeeling taste sensation. The astringency of this particular Snowview Estate tea is stronger than most and results in a tea flavored by those who relish the astringency and pungency for which Darjeeling teas are famous. $33.60

D043 - Arya Estate FTGFOP-1 1994 Autumnal Primarily black leaf with some tips. This is a fully fired Darjeeling Tea which brews a full bodied but very balanced liquor. It carries a medium Darjeeling cup character. A lighter firing would have extracted a more astringent cup but to the very light side in depth of character. $39.60

D044 - Soom Estate FTGFOP-1 1994 Autumnal A Darjeeling characterized by good flavor, aroma and color. Somewhat slow to develop but accommodating to a long infusion time. This is an interesting 1994 Autumnal Darjeeling tea presented at a very modest price. $39.60

D115 - Darjeeling SFTGFOP-1 (Supremely Fancy Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe #1) Singel Estate A distinctive Darjeeling possessing a good body and a pungency that lasts throughout the pot. Blessed with a wonderful fruity bouquet and an almost tangy refreshment quality. This rare, first flush Darjeeling brews a quality cup. $40.80

D125 - Darjeeling Makaibari Estate SFTGFOP-1 From a really great Darjeeling estate this tea provides rich muscat flavor and a superb lingering aftertaste. The lasting astringency and wonderful light golden color of this fine tea are among its desirable characteristics. It's a smooth cupping and multiple infusion tea. $48.00

D038 - Darjeeling Pussimbing Garden FTGFOP-1 1994 Autumnal "Organic" One of a kind. Long Tippy leaf with a very sweet and smooth taste. It has a rich aroma and specific Darjeeling astringency which is highly prized. We were fortunate to get this at auction. Very limited availability. $48.00

D047 - Milikthong Estate FTGFOP-1 1994 A typical II Flush, Tippy leaf style Darjeeling. It produces a unique flowery bouquet combined with a smooth cupping taste. These two characteristics in a II Flush Darjeeling, generally, are not present together. This is truly a very different and special Darjeeling . $54.00

D048 - Snowview Estate SFTGFOP-1 This Autumnal 1994 special SFTGFOP-1 tea has a strong Darjeeling flavor and produces a wonderful taste sensation. As with the Milikthong Estate listed above, we did not expect these two characteristics in this tea. Further, the leaf is a stylish medium size with about 5% silver tips. It is unusual for these two traits to be in combination, however the silver tip expands the overall Darjeeling sensation. All in all, for its price, we are thrilled with this fine tea. $55.80

D050 - Badamatam Estate FTGFOP-1 1994 This II Flush Darjeeling tea is flavorful, highly aromatic, possessing excellent Darjeeling characteristics, far superior to other II Flush Darjeelings in its price category. It has a very stylish leaf containing more tip than one would expect. It is this tippy leaf that produces the flavor quality of this fine tea in addition to its excellent aromatics. A wonderful Darjeeling value. $57.60

D116 - Darjeeling FTGFOP Puttabong Estate Good balance of tannins and an excellent flavor make this a very fine estate tea. A bright amber liquor and clean taste plus an acclaimed Darjeeling aroma produce a delicate cup of high quality tea. $63.16

D049 - Castleton Estate FTGFOP-1 This represents another very good 1994 II Flush Darjeeling at a moderate price. Excellent taste, muscat flavor and a superb aftertaste are this tea's characteristics. A most enjoyable Darjeeling from a classic Darjeeling Estate. $72.00

D046 - Goomtee Estate FTGFOP-1 This 1994 II Flush is a very, very well balanced Darjeeling with a marked flowery bouquet, wonderful flavor and an exquisite aftertaste. This tea produces a beautiful and colorful cup and a liquor which matches the promises of its immediate tactile sensations. We highly recommend this Darjeeling for both the accomplished and intermediate Darjeeling tea lover. $72.00

D045 - Risheehat Estate Fruity Green, Young Hyson Style Developed over a period of about 30 years, this Risheehat Green has an excellent accentuated fruity sweet flavor with an unusual taste sensation. It has a character all its own and cannot be compared to any other green tea in the world. For the Darjeeling tea drinker, this tea represents a departure from black tea while still retaining its Darjeeling heritage. A unique and very desirable tea experience. $72.00

D117 - Sikkim SFTGFOP Temi Estate Located just northwest of Darjeeling and east of Nepal, Sikkim produces a very, very limited quantity of world class exceptional teas. Once in a great while a truly exquisite estate tea comes along. Such is the case with this SFTGFOP#1 Temi. To quote our Tea Master, "Everything was perfect about this tea - the leaf, the flavor, the liquor, the taste and the infusion. A truly complete tea." A truly one of a kind tea experience. $96.00

D042 - Margaret Hope SFTGFOP-1 An exquisite 1994 Autumnal Darjeeling Tea. Harvested and manufactured in the autumnal season, this Darjeeling features an extraordinary combination of muscat flavor, rich aroma and a superb lingering (almost everlasting) aftertaste. Because these qualities were lacking in the previous four years' picks, we have rejected this tea until now. Todd and Holland is pleased to announce the return of this high-quality tea. $115.20

D051 - Darjeeling Jungpana Estate FTGFOP-1 1995 1st Flush This is the only tea that we accepted from this yearís first flush due to the late (10-18 days) arrival of the rains in Darjeeling which affected the high grown stand alone teas most. This tea has a light golden color with a delicate fruity aroma and a full bodied astringency. The aftertaste is pleasant and lingering. $139.20

D118 - Darjeeling SFTGFOP 1 Namring Estate Upper Garden #3 SFTGFOP-1, Spring Flush 1994 This tea has been exquisitely vintaged for one full year. It has a very sweet and smooth taste and a rich (one of a kind) aroma. It has a long, well twisted leaf and the very specific and highly prized "Namring" astringency for which the upper estate is noted. A high grown Darjeeling possessing a most delicate and fruity bouquet, this Namring from the Upper Garden #3 is, quite simply, one of the best Darjeelings available in the world today. With a consistent astringency that holds up over several infusions, this tea offers one of the truly great Darjeeling experiences of a lifetime. $240.00

The tea leaves are individually rolled into a ball that is the size of a large pearl, hence the name. This tea has been picked and manufactured by hand with the greatest of human care. The "pearls" are lovely and unusual to look at before brewing and a delight to the senses in every way. $136.00

Green Teas

Hundred of years ago, all tea was green. Recent research seems to back long-standing claims for the medicinal values of green teas. We think the best reason to drink green tea is to experience the range of taste sensations available from the high quality green teas listed below.

CG507 - Gunpowder Imperial Balled This classic China Green is held to be high in fluoride and good for the teeth. Gunpowder was one of the first teas to be exported from China in the early seventeenth century. This Imperial style (larger leaf) tea produces a dark-green brew with a strong memorable fragrance, with a slightly pungent but pleasant flavor while offering a long-lasting aftertaste. $11.62

CG501 - Young Hyson China Green Extra-Choicest These tightly twisted leaves produce a more full bodied and pungent brew than most other green teas. Though full bodied this Young Hyson is smooth. A very good green tea. $15.76
