The Institute is dedicated to basic research in climate variability, climate predictability and climate change. It has been established to improve understanding and prediction of the variations of the earth's climate through scientific research, and to share both the fruits of this research and the tools necessary to carry out this research with society as a whole.
The Institute consists of several centers of excellence, each dedicated to a particular scientific and societal goal. Currently there are two such centers, the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA) and the Center for Application of Research on the Environment (CARE).
