Best Bets in Business and Government

FedWorld

FedWorld, dubbed the "U.S. Government Bulletin Board," provides two ports of entry into the world of government jobs.

FedWorld via Telnet

FedWorld's telnet site has been in existence for some time, and provides menu driven access to job postings from the federal government's Office of Personnel Management. After selecting "Federal Job Openings" from the main menu, the choices offered are to search by a selective list of agencies, by broad geographic region or center, or by individual state. Job openings, arranged alphabetically by position title, can be keyword searched on a local or national level and the positions posted in FedWorld truly represent all lines of professional endeavor. Job announcements provide basic contact, salary, and classification information though narrative descriptions of duties and responsibilities are kept to a minimum. Users have the option of downloading much of the information maintained in FedWorld.

FedWorld Jobs, Labor, and Management Web Page

FedWorld's web page provides more complete job postings for the Department of the Interior: not only job title, classification, and contact information, but a full statement of duties and desired skills. Agencies listed within the Department include:

The web page also includes a link to job postings from the Office of Personnel Management mentioned above. Because of the poor organization of this section, job seekers would be better off connecting to the telnet site; it lists the same positions, with a more useful interface.

Medsearch America

Medsearch America focuses almost exclusively on opportunities in the health care field. Hiring employers include pharmaceutical companies; sports medicine clinics; cancer treatment centers; biotech firms; HMOs; health insurance companies; laboratories; and both senior and long-term care facilities. Medsearch America involves no fees to the prospective employee and offers a variety of search approaches. Medsearch America states that it prefers individuals with direct experience or transferable skills and hires for permanent, temporary, internship, contract, and volunteer positions.

Yahoo: Employment

Yahoo's "Employment" page is a great starting point for job-seekers in the business world. Yahoo is one of the best "lists of lists" on the Web--pointing to primary source materials originating and housed elsewhere that are available for searching. While most of these "lists of lists" provide hypertext links to make connecting to primary sources easier, you'll find an awful lot of cross-referencing and what will appear to be duplicated efforts. The best way to use such resources is to exhaust the possibilities on a given list before crossing over and starting in on a new one. As far as content is concerned, the emphasis here is still on high tech jobs, though the Yahoo: "Employment" list contains references to a number of smaller lists that tend to be either field or location specific--and that may be just what you're looking for. As you follow these side roads in your Internet job hunt, check to be sure any leads you decide to pursue are either marked "employer fee paid" or that you have a clear understanding of any fees that may be involved.
