St Martha-on-the-Hill, Guildford.

A favourite place of mine! The chapel was largely rebuilt in Victorian times as the old Medieval tower had collapsed. However large parts of the original structure (dating in places to just after the Norman Conquest) are incorporated into the new design. The Pilgrims' Way which was the old road between Winchester (the Medieval Capital of England) and Canterbury (The Shrine of Thomas Becket) ran up to St Martha's. This road survives on the hill as a steep, wooded path and there is a local tradition that St Martha's Hill formed the model for the hill "Difficulty" in John Bunyans' 'The Pilgrim's Progress'.The photograph was taken just before a snow shower moved in, the dotted lines in the sky are aircraft.
