University of Wisconsin La Crosse Mens Basketball Home Page UW-Platteville 65 at La Crosse 56 The Eagles gave the defending national champs a scare down the stretch, but it was not enough as Platteville defeated La Crose 65-56 before 496 loud fans at Mitchell Hall. Both teams struggled early as Plateville jumped out to a 35-22 halftime lead. The Eagles had it down to eight with just over a minute to play in the half, but consecutive turnovers gave the Pioneers a big advantage heading into the intermission. At the half, Platteville was shooting a blistering 58% and held La Crosse to a rather ordinary 39%. In addition, Platteville had 11 assists to UW-L's three. Scott Borroughs hit all six shots and had 12 by the break, and Ben Hoffman had five assists in the first twenty minutes. In the second half, an early run by La Crosse cut the lead to seven, but it Platteville's lead remained around ten points throughout most of the rest of the game. La Crosse cut the lead to five at 59-54 with 2:34 to play, but a couple of offensive fouls kept the score there until the 1:04 mark. Especially big was an Eric Dudek turnover after a defensive stop that gave UW-P the ball back. After neglecting to call a time-out with 1:10 left Platteville inbounded the ball and was fouled with 1:04 left. They hit two free throws, and kept hitting them down the stretch to eke out a win. For the game, Platteville made 22-28 free throws (83%) while La Crosse made 8 of their 10 attempts. From the field for the game, La Crosse shot 48% compared to Platteville's 43%. Another big difference was the fact that La Crosse doubled up Platteville in the turnover category, 20-10. Some questionable coaching down the stretch (including a technical foul) hurt the Eagles in their attempt for the biggest upset in school history. Melvin Veasley, back in the starting line-up after a brief hiatus, led the Eagles with 17 points (13 in 2nd half) and 9 rebounds, Eric Dudek had 13, and Wes Warren had 11 points off the bench. Ty Cornell made his first career start in place of Warren. Also, Chuck Simspon returned to action but only played a few minutes in the second half and he was not a factor. Scott Borroughs had 18 points for the Pioneers, and John Paulsen chimed in with 16. Wih the loss, La Crosse fell to 7-11 overall (0-10 in 1996) and 0-10 in the WSUC, while Platteville, ranked second nationally in the latest polls, improved to 10-0 in the WSUC and 18-1 overall. Things do not get any easier for the Eagles. They host the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans this Saturday. Oshkosh is 17-1 with their lone blemish this season being a loss to Platteville.
