It's what is -- or is not -- whirling around in their heads.
UW-L dropped its sixth consecutive game Wednesday night, falling to UW-Stevens Point 51-48 in a WSUC contest. The Eagles, once 8-0, have fallen to 9-7.
``You would watch this team and not say that they lacked confidence. You would watch this team and say they choked,'' Gross said. ``We are not in a situation where there are positives in a loss. This was a game that was ours to win. We played well enough to win.''
Not over the final six minutes.
UW-L held a seven point lead over the Pointers with more than six minutes remaining. The Eagles, however, managed just three points over the final 6:38. Making matters worse, UW-L rushed several shots at critical points, missed an easy layup off an out-of-bounds play, and turned the ball over.
``It is all the little things,'' said Gross, whose team fell to 1-7 in WSUC action. ``It is like watching a River Falls game, an Eau Claire game, a Superior game. With under five minutes left in the game, somebody in the arena pushes a panic button.''
Chuck Simpson rebounded from a sub-par shooting game against Superior to score 15 points on a 5-for-9 effort from the field. He was the only Eagle in double figures. Mike Paynter led Stevens Point (5-3, 13-4) with 17 points.
