MACINTOSH AND POWER MAC SERVERS

[X]Necessary Software For Macintosh Networking

To connect your server to the Internet you'll need MacTCP. Additionally, if you'll be using a dialup connection for your server, you'll need one of the following:

*MacPPP - For those Macintosh users using a dialup connection, Mac Point to Point Protocol (PPP) provides the necessary networking complement to MacTCP on your server. Filename is macppp2.0.1.hqx or later version.
*InterSlip - is provided by Intercon Systems Corporation of Reston, Virginia. This is a free, but unsupported product for the Macintosh which gives you SLIP connectivity. Filename is InterSLIPInstaller1.0.1.hqx.
*FTPd by Peter Lewis. This fully featured FTP implementation also includes Gopher server software. It supports access from remote Gopher clients and also lets your Mac act as an Anonymous FTP server, thereby allowing you to make your Mac files available worldwide for file transfer. Filename is ftpd-22.hqx.
*NCSA Telnet - provides a standard file transfer (FTP) server to allow you to transfer files to and from other remote systems. Filename is Telnet2.6.sit.hqx.
*Gopher Surfer - The latest versions of Gopher Surfer work on both 680x0 & PowerMacs. Binary files that work on either architecture are called "FAT" binaries, those that donÕt contain support for AppleSearch are called "Gopher Surfer Lite". Therefore, there is a "FAT-LIT E" and a "FAT-HEAVY" version. You need to select and retrieve the most appropriate version for your requirements and hardware. Filename is GopherSurfer1.0b8_68K.sea.hqx or other versions (e.g. PowerMac).
*FTPd - includes a Gopher Server. Filename is ftpd-22.hqx.
*MacHTTP Server - is a fully featured Web server, by Chuck Shotton, that allows you to serve hypermedia documents to WWW users from the Macintosh. Filename is machttp.sit.hqx.

[X]HTML Authoring on the Macintosh

Once you've acquired a basic understanding of HTML, you can begin to develop your own documents. There are a number of options available for creating HTML documents on the Macintosh. These include:

*Simple HTML Editor (Hypercard Stack) Filename is simple-html-editor.hqx.
*WYSISWYG (Hypercard Stack) Filename is wysiswyg.cpt.hqx.
*If you have existing text files that you'd like to "put up" on your server, you'll need to convert them to HTML. rtftohtml takes text that has been saved in "rtf" format from programs like Microsoft Word an d produces HTML. This link is to a documentation file with a filename of rtftohtml_overview.html. Retrieve the doc and you'll have a link to the executables.

MICROSOFT DOS, WINDOWS, AND WINDOWS NT

*Trumpet Winsock - by Peter Tattam, is a Windows Sockets 1.1 compatible TCP/IP stack which provides a standard interface for many Windows networking applications to use. You'll need this, or its equiva lent, to run most of the software listed below. Filename is twsk20b.zip.

[X]Windows File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Servers:

*WFTPd FTP Server - is an FTP server, written by Alun Jones, which allows you to set up an FTP server under Microsoft Windows 3.1 thereby making your files available to FTP clients. Filename is wftpd196.zip.
*WinQVT/Net - WinQVT/Net is a suite of TCP/IP client and server applications for the Microsoft Windows environment provided by QPC Software as a shareware product. WinQVT/Net includes an FTP server that allows remote users to log on to your PC and transfer files using the FTP protocol and an rcp server which allows files to be copied to and from the PC from the remote user's Unix command line. Filename is qvtws397.zip.
*SERV-U - is a full featured FTP server, written by Rob Beckers, for Microsoft Windows 3.1. Filename is ftpsrv11.zip.
*Beame & Whiteside BW Connect - contains an FTP server for DOS and Microsoft Windows 3.1. This suite of commercial server products follow the UNIX model incorporating the first inetd daemon for Windows. See the readme.txt file for evaluation copy information.
*Windows NT has a "built-in" FTP server service which includes integration with the NT security model. Consult the NT commercial software distribution or Microsoft's Web Server for more information.

[X]DOS, Windows, and NT Gopher Servers

*GO4HAMThe GO4HAM package, a Gopher for Windows, and its predecessor for DOS, were written by Gunter Hille. Filename is go4ham.zip.
*KA9Q is a full fledged network operating system which runs under DOS. Written by Phil Karn, the system's features include: a POP2/POP3/SMTP mail server, an FTP server, a CSO name server, and, a Gopher and WWW server. Filename is NOS11C-A.EXE. There's plenty of documentation available. More than just a manual -- a gopher for KA9Q support. Compliments of Mark Johnson, Ashok Aiyar, and Phillip Ingram.

*Gopher Server for Windows NT - The European Microsoft Windows NT Academic Centre (EMWAC) is a project based at the University of Edinburgh and sponsored by Datalink Computers, Digital Equipment Corporation, Microsoft, Research Machines, Sequent, and the University of Edinburgh. One of their first endeavors was to release a Gopher server based on the Microsoft Windows NT operating system.This excellent program was written by Chris Adie. There are two zipped files, one for Intel based hardware and one for DEC Alpha. Be sure to select the proper one to match your hardware. Intel version filename is gsi386.zip.

[X]Windows and NT World Wide Web (WWW) Servers :

*SerWeb - is a freeware WWW server that runs under Microsoft 3.1 or Windows NT. The server was written in C++ by Gustavo Estrella and the source code is available as part of the software distribution. Filename is serweb03.zip.
*Web4HAM is a WWW server developed by Gunter Hille at the University of Hamburg. The product is in its early development (v 0.16) and offers an easy to install package. Filename is web4ham.zip.
*WHTTPd - this is Bob Denny's Windows HTTP server. The operation and configuration of the Windows HTTP server closely parallels the Unix server. Filename is whttpd14.zip Also check out the associated utilities that accompany the software at the home of the WHTTPd server.
*Beame & Whiteside BW Connect - contains a Web server for DOS and Microsoft Windows 3.1. See the readme.txt file for evaluation copy information.
*ZBServer, written Bob Bradley, does double duty as a Web and Gopher server for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. Especially easy to install.
*Process Software Corporation, through an agreement with EMWAC, has taken the EMWACS Web server, enhanced it, and offers it as a commercial product called Purveyor.
*HTTP Server for Windows NT - An excellent WWW implementation written by Chris Adie of EMWAC. Filename is hsi386.zip.
*WebSite, is a HTTP server for Windows 95 and Windows NT written by Bob Denny in cooperation with O'Reilly & Associates.
*Alibaba is a HTTP server for Windows NT from Computer Software Manufactur (CSM) in Austria. A beta demo, filename: alidemo.exe, is available for this soon-to-be commercial product.

[X]Windows Server Utlities :

*PolyForm is a configurable CGI forms handling package which can create forms for customer feedback, provide automatic mail response to customers, and offers a variety of other applications that you'll need and want on your server. All this in a nice, configurable package that requires no programming on your part. The necessary software is provided by Mark Bracewell of Willow Glen Graphics. PolyForm is currently implemented on the WHHTPd server.

[X]Windows HTML Authoring Tools

*HTML Assistant is a simple text editor with extensions for the creation of HTML hypertext documents. It was developed for the Microsoft Windows environment and written by Howard Harawitz. The software is available via Anonymous FTP from ftp.cs.dal.ca in the /htmlasst directory. Filenames are htmlasst.zip and vbrun300.zip.
*Another HTML authoring and editing tool for Windows is HTML Writer, by Kris Nosack. Filenames are htmlwrit.zip and vbrun300.zip.

[X]Other Windows Servers

*Finger Server - A Finger server. Filename is wfngrd11.zip.
*Windows SMTP Mail Server - A SMTP mail server for Windows yet to be tested. Source code included. Filename is wsmtpd16.zip.
*NTMAIL provides SMTP and POP3 server capabilities for Windows NT. You can run a Listserv too.
