MACINTOSH AND POWER MAC SERVERS |
Necessary Software For Macintosh Networking
To connect your server to the Internet you'll need MacTCP. Additionally, if you'll be using a dialup connection for your server, you'll need one of the following:
- MacPPP - For those Macintosh users using a dialup connection, Mac Point to Point Protocol (PPP) provides the necessary networking complement to MacTCP on your server. Filename is macppp2.0.1.hqx or later version.
- InterSlip - is provided by Intercon Systems Corporation of Reston, Virginia. This is a free, but unsupported product for the Macintosh which gives you SLIP connectivity. Filename is InterSLIPInstaller1.0.1.hqx.
- FTPd by Peter Lewis. This fully featured FTP implementation also includes Gopher server software. It supports access from remote Gopher clients and also lets your Mac act as an Anonymous FTP server, thereby allowing you to make your Mac files available worldwide for file transfer. Filename is ftpd-22.hqx.
- NCSA Telnet - provides a standard file transfer (FTP) server to allow you to transfer files to and from other remote systems. Filename is Telnet2.6.sit.hqx.
- Gopher Surfer -
The latest versions of Gopher Surfer work on both 680x0 & PowerMacs. Binary files that work on either architecture are called "FAT" binaries, those that donÕt contain support for AppleSearch are called "Gopher Surfer Lite". Therefore, there is a "FAT-LIT
E" and a "FAT-HEAVY" version. You need to select and retrieve the most appropriate version for your requirements and hardware. Filename is GopherSurfer1.0b8_68K.sea.hqx or other versions (e.g. PowerMac).
- FTPd - includes a Gopher Server. Filename is ftpd-22.hqx.
- MacHTTP Server - is a fully featured Web server, by Chuck Shotton, that allows you to serve hypermedia documents to WWW users from the Macintosh. Filename is machttp.sit.hqx.
HTML Authoring on the Macintosh
Once you've acquired a basic understanding of HTML, you can begin to develop your own documents. There are a number of options available for creating HTML documents on the Macintosh. These include:
- Simple HTML Editor (Hypercard Stack) Filename is simple-html-editor.hqx.
- WYSISWYG (Hypercard Stack) Filename is wysiswyg.cpt.hqx.
- If you have existing text files that you'd like to "put up" on your server, you'll need to convert them to HTML. rtftohtml takes text that has been saved in "rtf" format from programs like Microsoft Word an
d produces HTML. This link is to a documentation file with a filename of rtftohtml_overview.html. Retrieve the doc and you'll have a link to the executables.
