Jurrasic Park Comes
To Aberdeen University

The same computer technology that created Jurassic Park is being used to train computing students at the University of Aberdeen in the multimedia technologies of tomorrow.

Computers from Silicon Graphics, equipped with video cameras, 3D colour graphics and Internet access, have been installed in the University's new Multimedia Teaching Laboratory. The Laboratory was opened today by the Principal of the University, Professor J Maxwell Irvine.

The new Laboratory was funded by an equipment grant of 75,000 pounds from the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council. According to the University, this has created one of the most sophisticated teaching laboratories in Scotland. "We are giving both under- and post-graduate students access to the latest multimedia technology available. It is most appropriate that, as we celebrate our quincentenary, we are opening this sophisticated facility to surf the new seas of the Internet," said Professor Gray of the Department of Computing Science.

"The use of Silicon Graphics' computers for training means that students are learning on the best equipment available. Silicon Graphics is the leader in this field, providing the most advanced equipment for high-performance visual computing. No other manufacturer can produce the sophisticated graphics and multimedia capabilities normally associated with films such as Jurassic Park," said Alan Mackie, Silicon Graphics' Public Sector account manager in Scotland.

At the new teaching Laboratory, the University of Aberdeen has installed fourteen Silicon Graphics Indy workstations and one Silicon Graphics Challenge S server.

Silicon Graphics is the leading manufacturer of high-performance visual computing and data server systems. The company delivers interactive three dimensional graphics, digital media, and multiprocessing supercomputing technologies for use in technical, commercial and entertainment environments. With WebFORCE, Silicon Graphics offers a range of solutions for creating and serving digital material via the World Wide Web. Its subsidiary, MIPS, Technologies, Inc., designs and licenses the industry's leading RISC processor technology for the computer systems and embedded control markets. Silicon Graphics has offices worldwide and headquarters in Mountain View, California, and posted revenues of $1.5 billion for the 1994 financial year.
