Internship and Cooperative Education Programs

Philosophy

The purpose of Internship and Cooperative Education programs is to develop relationships with students, who will one day be ambitious and motivated employees, early in their careers and distinguish Silicon Graphics as the employer of choice.

The program provides benefits to both the students and SGI. As the employer, SGI is the recipient of : fresh ideas and talent; employees with a hunger and passion for knowledge; employees more assessible to current trends, theories and research; and a cost effective means to achieve organizational goals. SGI also gets the opportunity to take some of the brightest minds and mold or shape them into the next SGI generation. By reaching the best and brightest early in their careers and selling them on SGI through hands-on experience, as a whole, our college hire recruiting cost will be lowered. Upon returning to their campuses, our interns and co-op students will be SGI ambassadors sharing their SGI experiences with other bright and talented students.

The Intern or co-op student gains hands-on training; the opportunity to work with some of the best and brightest; the opportunity to test the applicability of classroom analysis; and the ability to establish important ties for future career opportunities.

Intern

A full-time student who is currently enrolled in a curriculum from which we traditionally hire. The SGI job assignment must be pertinent to the student's field of study. The assignment can be a full-time one or part-time year round.

A student may retain their intern status for six months after graduation. At that point the hiring manager will need to change the intern's status to temporary worker through SGI's on-site agency (Adia), or hire the Intern as a regular SGI employee. Although SGI does not provide housing, the internship program does list local housing opportunities for internship candidates.

Co-op

A full-time student who is currently enrolled in a curriculum from which we traditionally hire.

To qualify as a co-op, a student must be enrolled through their University's Co-op program. The co-op assignment must adhere to the guidelines set-forth by that University.

Co-op assignments differ from intern assignments by affording the students an opportunity to combine work experience with classroom studies. In addition to their salaries students traditionally earn school credits for their work experience. Assignments can be full-time or part-time and alternate on a quarterly or semesterly basis.

Interns and co-ops are eligible and are encouraged to attend all SGI functions.
