Third quarter revenues were both strong and well balanced. The high-end of our product line represented 38% of shipment revenue and our desktop systems represented 62%. Our North American business grew 46% over the year ago March quarter and represented 49% of total revenue and our European and Pacific Rim businesses grew 53% and 42%, respectively. Combined international businesses represented 51% of total revenue.
During the quarter, robust sales of our Indy(TM) and Indigo2(TM) product lines continued to strengthen our position in our largest market, computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM). Additionally, we announced that IBM's CATIA® software family will be ported to our systems. With the addition of CATIA software, Silicon Graphics now supports the leading applications software for CAD, CAM, and computer-aided engineering. Currently, approximately 1,000 software developers in a variety of markets bring more than 2,000 applications to our visual computing systems.
Silicon Graphics is also very involved in the $11 billion entertainment market, an area which represents a large opportunity for our products and services as it moves from analog technology to digital technology. We have become a leading hardware supplier to certain segments of this market and our opportunity continues to expand. The February announcement of our intent to merge with two leading software companies, Alias Research Inc. and Wavefront Technologies, Inc., is a significant step as we expand our position in the entertainment market. The mergers will accelerate the development of what has been called "the digital studio of the 21st Century." We intend to provide a seamless solution that will allow creative people to be more productive. By bringing together the complementary technologies of Silicon Graphics, Alias and Wavefront, we will be able to create a more comprehensive architecture and more advanced tools for the digital studio.
Under the terms of the merger agreements, Alias stockholders will receive the equivalent of 0.90 shares of Silicon Graphics common stock for each share of Alias common stock and Wavefront stockholders will receive 0.49 shares of Silicon Graphics common stock for each share of Wavefront common stock. Completion of the merger is subject to customary conditions that include the approval of Alias and Wavefront stockholders and the required governmental approvals. We expect completion of this transaction in June 1995.
In April, we announced that Time Warner will become a 10% owner of Interactive Digital Solutions, a joint venture company formed in June 1994 by Silicon Graphics and AT&T Network Systems. Interactive Digital Solutions develops software for interactive applications which deliver a complete interactive multimedia solution to customers in cable television and telephone company networks. These networks will provide customers with interactive services such as video-on-demand and interactive games, and information services including news-on-demand. Time Warner will add its cable technology, programming and entertainment expertise to an already powerful partnership in the new interactive marketplace.
Our MIPS Technologies, Inc. subsidiary announced the MIPS® Magic Carpet(TM), its first low-cost multi-media chip set specifically designed for interactive consumer products such as set-top boxes and 3D realistic games. Magic Carpet consists of a MIPS RISC microprocessor and a MIPS media accelerator that processes and digitally compresses video, audio and data. AT&T, Philips, Samsung and Time Warner Cable announced their support of the Magic Carpet and their intent to use it in a variety of new interactive products. We are excited about this significant step toward making this market a reality.
We are also very pleased to announce that Michael Graves joined Silicon Graphics as vice president and chief information officer and is responsible for the management of Silicon Graphics' worldwide information systems. Mike's experience will be extremely valuable to the key information systems projects we are undertaking to support our growth. Additionally, we are very pleased to announce that Cynthia Reese, a six-year veteran of Silicon Graphics, has been promoted to vice president of worldwide materials. Cynthia has let the materials department through tremendous growth and continues to develop worldwide strategies, international supplier relationships and deliver quality materials and products to our customers.
The March 1995 quarter was very eventful for Silicon Graphics. We continued to build momentum in the marketplace for our visual computing technologies, strengthen our relationships in a variety of markets, broaden the applicability of our technology, and enhance our management team. Sincerely,
Edward R. McCracken Thomas A. Jermoluk Chairman & CEO President & COO
