For the first six months of this fiscal year, we reported revenues of $951 million, an increase of 42% over the same period for the prior fiscal year. Net income was $96 million for the six month period ended December 31, 1994 or $.61 per share, compared with net income of $62 million or $.41 per share in the same period for the prior fiscal year.
One of the most pleasing aspects of the quarter was that our growth was well balanced from both a geographic and a product line standpoint. Our North American business grew 31% over second quarter of last year and represented 50% of the total revenue for the second quarter. Our international business grew 54%, reflecting the improving European and Asian economies. Our low-end, desktop systems revenues grew 38% and our high-end server and supercomputing products grew 50%, reflecting a strong reception for our new POWER series products using the MIPS R8000 processor.
On the desktop, the growth was fueled by MIPS microprocessors upgrades to both our Indy and Indigo2 products that were implemented without an increase in price. We also shipped POWER Indigo2, which utilizes the same MIPS RISC R8000 microprocessor found in our POWER CHALLENGE supercomputer. The POWER Indigo2 was well received by customers who have been waiting for a desktop supercomputer. We also introduced our new Indy Modeler system which enhances our product offerings to the computer aided design and engineering market by providing engineers access to a powerful CAD design environment. Each system is based on Silicon Graphics Indy 133MHz R4600 system and is bundled with connectivity and collaboration packages. To further enhance our customers productivity in the CAD/CAM market, we announced SiliconWorks, an integrated solution set that combines third party applications with our workstations to facilitate product development from concept to prototyping.
At the high-end of our product line, our leadership position in visual computing continues to be fueled by the robust sales of our Onyx and our new POWER Onyx systems. Customers seeking supercomputing performance coupled with the highest graphics capabilities available chose the POWER Onyx, which started shipping in the December quarter. For those customers who buy our systems for their sheer computing power, we increased the performance of our family of CHALLENGE servers by offering 200MHz versions of the MIPS R4400-based CHALLENGE symmetric multiprocessing servers. The increased performance capabilities of these servers gives our technical database, file and media customers an even better computing solution.
In addition to announcing new hardware, we were active on the software front. We announced IRIS Annotator an advanced collaborative computing tool that enables users to attach digital media annotations such as audio, images, text and video, to 3D models. This provides a powerful, easy-to-use method of sharing ideas and improving communications among team members from different locations. IRIS Annotator will ship in the first calendar quarter of 1995. Our commitment to sharing ideas is not limited to Silicon Graphics systems. We licensed our InPerson desktop videoconferencing application to NetManage for the purpose of developing an interoperability solution that will allow Silicon Graphics workstation users to collaborate with Windows PC users. Broadening the access of real-time desktop conference sessions to PC users will allow additional team members who do not have access to workstations to communicate with their peers.
In January, we fortified our management team with the addition of Javaid Aziz. As senior vice president of our European operations, Javaid will be responsible for all marketing, sales, service and manufacturing activities. Javaid brings twenty years of experience from IBM including technical, marketing and management positions throughout Europe, and most recently, as chief executive officer of IBMs UK operations. We are delighted that he has joined our Company, and we look forward to his leadership and expertise in building our European business.
With strong financial results and an industry-leading product line, we continue to develop our unique strengths and expand the reach of our technology. As always, we extend our thanks to our customers, suppliers, employees, and stockholders for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Edward R. McCracken Thomas A. Jermoluk Chairman & CEO President & COO
