Sharing the Power

SGI and NCSA

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), a National Science Foundation Supercomputer Center, is a unit of the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign which provides advanced computing resoources to scientists, educators, engineers, and artists. These resources include software, education, information, and access to supercomputers. In the last year, the center has provided high performance computingand communications to over 3,000 users at more than 250 universities and corporations, while millions worldwide explore Internet information resources using NCSA Mosaic.

"NCSA has been a believer in Silicon Graphics since we were established. Our efforts in scientific visualization and computer art in the 1980s depended heavily on Silicon Graphics systems," said Dr. Larry Smarr, Direector of NCSA. "We're looking next to expand our involvement with Silicon Graphics into high performance computing by offering access to Silicon Graphics POWER CHALLENGE supercomputers. They're playing a major role in helping NCSA lead the way in the transition from traditional vector supercomputing to a world of inexpensive scalable systems. The POWER CHALLENGE offers tremendous computing power at a fraction of the cost of a traditional supercomputer and as a result, offers NCSA much more flexibility in serving the needs of our end users."
