DESQview/X brings you the windowing, multitasking, DOS and Microsoft Windows compatibility, data transfer, and key-stroke macro facilities, that you would expect from Quarterdeck, the leader in DOS multitasking.

DESQview/X Connectivity to Other X Systems

Now with DESQview/X, you can also share applications, processors, and even memory. DESQview/X brings to DOS the power of the X Window System, an international standard for graphical windowing and distributed computing.

With DESQview/X your networked resources can become transparently accessible from your PC. This means that your DOS text* and Microsoft Windows applications can run locally on your DESQview/X PC, or remotely, on another networked DESQview/X PC that has more memory or more processing power. With DESQview/X, your PC can display applications that are running on other computers on the net that are running X, such as UNIX computers. Regardless of where an application resides, on your own hard disk or down the hall, you just point and click to run it.

DESQview/X can also become an application server. DOS text programs and Microsoft Windows can be run on a DESQview/X machine, but displayed on any other system on the network which is running X. Thus, the large library of DOS and Windows programs is now available to non-DOS computers.

Maintaining a Consistent Look and Feel

The X Window System is widespread, running on powerful graphics workstations (Data General AViiON, Sun SPARCstation, IBM RS/6000, Hewlett Packard 9000, DEC VAXstation, and others), on X terminals and even on mainframe computers.

Although all of these systems are running the X Window System, they sometimes have a different user interface. The two most common interfaces are the Motif Window Manager and the OPEN LOOK Window Manager.

DESQview/X includes the DESQview Window Manager, which is designed for fast and easy application launching and switching, and easy customization. But for those users who want DESQview/X to have the same user interact as other X Systems, optional Motif and OPEN LOOK Window Managers are available.

Without DESQview/X

• Mary must go to Bill's office to review his projects, as they don't run on DOS-based PCs
• Bill often reviews Mary's budget files and must go to her office because her Windows spreadsheet files don't run on his Sun
• Sandy constantly must use the fax/modem in Mary's PC
• Sandy, Mary, and Bill use cryptic commands to copy files between the Sun and the DOS PCs
• When either Mary or Sandy want to print Bill's engineering plans, they have to ask Bill to do it

With DESQview/X

• Mary can review Bill's projects, while sitting at her own machine, by using DV/X's Remote Program Launcher to use Bill's software and files
• Bill can reviews Mary's budget files via DESQview/X's WINX program which allows his Sun to use the Windows-based applications and files on Mary's machine
• Sandy can use the communication software and fax/modem on Mary's machine without leaving her own desk by using DESQview/X's Remote Program Launcher
• Sandy, Mary, and Bill can transfer files between each other's machines using DESQview/X's graphical File Manager
• Mary and Sandy can print Bill's engineering plans directly from their own machines
