About Down House

Down House is an eighteenth century, three-story Grade 1 listed country house surrounded by 20 acres of garden. It is in urgent need of considerable restoration - the building, greenhouse, laboratory and grounds are in a dilapidated condition whilst the severe lack of facilities means that the great educational potential of Down House remains untapped.

The Museum has already raised £420,000 towards the restoration costs and submitted a bid to the Heritage Lottery fund for £2.4 million. It is continuing its fundraising efforts and anyone interested in the appeal should contact Nancy Giles, Development Manager on nnsg@nhm.ac.uk.
