[P6 Processor Package Photo] Intel's P6 Processor

The P6 family of processors will be the next generation of Intel's processor technology. All members of the P6 family will be designed for complete compatibility with all PC software. The high performance of the P6 will make it especially well-suited for upcoming desktop applications like speech recognition and multimedia authoring, as well as for more demanding server and workstation applications. The P6 delivers its superior performance through an innovation called dynamic execution.

Intel Announces User Test Program for the P6 Processor

Later this summer, Intel will loan pre-production P6 systems to a diverse group of several hundred PC users to gather information about the P6 as it is used in compute-intensive, real-world applications. This is the first time a microprocessor supplier has used such a large group of PC users to test a new generation of microprocessors. The users will be selected from science, engineering, academia, software development, business and other fields. This user test program is incremental to Intel's exhaustive test procedures.

Some of the users will be selected from our web audience. For those interested in participating, we will set up an application form later this summer on Intel's web site. Watch this page for more information, or subscribe to our P6 mailing list by sending an email message to p6info-request@mailbag.intel.com with the word "subscribe" in the first line of the body.

Microarchitecture Details Presented at ISSCC

On February 16th, Intel presented details on the P6 microarchitecture at the 1995 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). The next-generation Intel-architecture processor is implemented in a 0.6 micron 4-layer-metal BiCMOS process. Performance improvement is achieved through a generalized dynamic-execution microengine.
