FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SIX GREENPEACE PROTESTORS TO BE DEPORTED FROM CHINA TOMORROW
BEIJING, 15 August, 1995 -- (GP) The six Greenpeace activists detained by Chinese police for 14 hours today after holding up a protest banner in Tiananmen Square are being held under guard at a hotel near Beijing airport and are expected to be deported tomorrow.
Greenpeace's Harald Zindler, in a phone call from the Beijing Grace Hotel, told Damon Moglen, still in Beijing, that the six are safe, in good spirits and expect to be flown to Hong Kong on a morning flight.
"We are relieved to hear that our activists are safe after having no contact with them since their nuclear testing protest in Tiananmen Square early morning in Beijing," Greenpeace's Moglen said. "We are, however, committed to continuing to send a clear message to China, whether from outside the country or within, that nuclear testing is unacceptable by China, France or any other nation."
Details of the deportation of the Greenpeace activists remains sketchy but Zindler reported that most would be flown to Hong Kong on an early flight out. It is unclear as to who will be deported when and to where but we hope to learn more in the morning Beijing time.
The Greenpeace deportees may be available to Hong Kong press when they arrive once more details are known. Please keep in contact with Greenpeace Communications for information.
