From: Greenpeace vessel MV Solo tracking Pacific Pintail
Date: MON 10-APR-95 06:02:33 GMT -- DAY 47, PART I
NUCLEAR WASTE SHIP NEARS HAWAII
The Pacific Pintail's position (0600 GMT) is 14 degrees 35
minutes North, and 159 degrees and 40 minutes West. The Pintail's
course is 310 degrees and the ship's speed is 14 knots. We are
at the moment some 325 miles southwest of the island Hawaii.
While the nuclear waste ship is approaching Hawaii, the US
Department of Energy has brushed aside concerns about the
shipment expressed by US Representative Abercombie from Hawaii.
Abercombie and other US leaders have questioned the safety of the
shipment and demanded a full safety study. Previous demands by
US elected officials for independent safety and security studies
on plutonium and high level waste shipments were blocked by the
US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Direction and distances of the radioactive waste shipment with
the Pacific Pintail to some of Pacific Island States. The Pacific
Pintail sails per day a distance of approximately 300 nautical
miles.
