About this page

This is a completely unofficial list of the Project Gutenberg electronic texts. Most of these texts are in the public domain; all have extensive legal "small print" at the top. The links on this page point back to the "official" sources at UIUC, which are in plain ASCII format. There are some marked-up (in html) versions of a few of these texts floating around, but I don't know where they are. If you know of any, please let me know and I'll stick in pointers.

I created this list basically for my own use, since I didn't like decyphering the eight-letter filenames the Gutenberg folks like to give their texts. I do follow the Gutenberg newsletter, so I see their announcements of new e-texts, and I try to update this list as quickly as possible.

Since I started this list, I have seen some other meta-lists of electronic texts. None were organized as I liked them, so I've kept this up. I don't know what the future will bring, maybe somebody from Gutenberg or another project will undertake to systematically catalog all literature available on the web.

I'd love to hear feedback about this page (but since I don't have much access to the machine which serves this, I haven't set up a neat feedback form yet).

Warning!

New management above me here at CERN has decided that they don't need my services anymore, so when my contract is up at the end of June, it looks like Je suis outta here!. I don't know if I'll have web access at my next job, so I will have to relinquish this page.

I'm trying to talk the Gutenberg folks themselves into putting up an httpd server, making their texts available on it, and taking over this list. Failing that, I'll try to talk them into at least putting this up on their ftp server. I have a few volunteers who've offered computer access and maintainence effort; if all else fails this list will pass to them. Watch the indices, they should track the destination, and I'll try to get CERN's daemon folk to put in a redirect.

(Also, if anyone would like to hire a physicist with extensive computing experience, as well as a taste for literature, please contact me! Thanks.)
