Well preserved in river deposits in south eastern Alberta, this original specimen is one of the rarest hadrosaurs. Its Latin name means short crested lizard. The small solid crest at the top of the skull behind the eyes shows its relationship to other duckbills such as Prosaurolophus.
Although this dinosaur dates from the Late Cretaceous, it has many primitive features. It was first believed to be a new species of Gryposaurus.
