Field Experience: Mid-Season Update
The Tyrrell's Field Experience Program is only half-over (as of
July 24, 1995), but already the summer is a smashing success. Our
staff and participants have already:
- Uncovered an excellent post cranial skeleton of a hadrosaur which
may turn out to be a Parasaurolophus
- Collected an almost complete, disarticulated Albertosaurus, one of only about a
dozen specimens known in the world
- Discovered and collected a phenomenally well-preserved skeleton of
an ornithomimid dinosaur, with a complete, articulated skull. This is
only the fourth and most complete ornithomimid skull of this species
in the World! It is also one of the best finds in Dinosaur Park in 20
years!
- Opened two of the three Centrosaurus bonebeds slated for
excavation this summer. Geological work has indicated that the death
assemblage in the two Centrosaurus bonebeds originally comprised 200
to 400 individuals, and that the flooding events that buried these
assemblages were common occurrences.
We still have a few positions open for people who wish to
participate in these excavations and stay at our field camp for a
week or more in August, '95. Please contact the Bookings Officer at the Tyrrell
Museum for further information.
