The name "Medicine Hat," like many names in Alberta,
is derived from Indian lore. Legend has it that the Cree and Blackfoot were fighting
on the banks of a river. The Cree medicine man deserted the Cree, losing his
headware in the stream. The Cree, seeing this as a bad omen, put down their
weapons and were killed by the Blackfoot (proving, I guess, that it was indeed
a bad omen). The site then became known as "Medicine Man's Hat."
"The Gas City," as Medicine Hat is sometimes known, is home to the
world's largest teepee and the Saamis archeological site. If
scenery is more your style you might want to check out some
of Medicine Hat's parks and it's 60-70 kilometers in trails.
