Jasper National Park
Jasper National Park, Banff National
Park's northern neighbor, encompasses 10878 square
kilometers of area in the Rocky Mountains. It was established
in 1907 and includes beautiful lakes, waterfalls, moutains
and glaciers. The Columbia Icefields, the largest chunk of ice
in the Rocky Mountains, lies in the southern portion of the park.
The glacier itself is 16 km wide and 24 km long and straddles the
Great Divide between Alberta and British Columbia. The total
area of the glaciers is 390 square kilometers, sometimes as deep
as 900 metres.
Jasper National Park is rather less-developed than it's southern
neighbor (Banff National
Park), and as such there are fewer developed sites.
The town of Jasper is the only
population centre within the park. As with (Banff National
Park), wildlife of all sorts can be found within the park.
Numerous recreation possibilities exist, including
hiking, camping, fishing, trail rides, and picnicking.
Winter possibilities include Down-hill and cross-country skiing,
skating, toboganning, and hockey.
