BORLAND SHIPS TURBO C++ 4.5

Upgrade Combines Learning Tools with Latest C++ Technologies

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. -- March 20, 1995 -- Borland International Inc. today announced Turbo C++ 4.5, a new version of its best-selling C and C++ software development system for beginning programmers, students, and hobbyists. Turbo C++ makes learning fun by combining five free games, including full source code, with Borland's critically acclaimed C++ technologies.

"Turbo C++ 4.5 is a fast, fun way for new programmers to learn C and C++," said David Watkins, vice president of Marketing and Support at Borland International. "We've updated the product to include the latest C++ technologies so beginners have all the tools they need to master this complex programming language."

Turbo C++ includes a multimedia QuickTour, which provides an overview of the C++ programming environment. QuickTour makes it easy for novice programmers to learn about important new features, such as the integrated graphical debugger, multi-target project manager and C++ language enhancements. Turbo C++ also contains other tools to help new programmers learn C++, including a Programming Tips and Techniques help file, which contains technical information and tutorials, a complete list of answers to frequently asked C++ questions, and thousands of pages of on-line documentation.

Turbo C++ also contains five new games--Turbo Meteors (an Asteroids-like game), Turbo Blocks, Turbo Cribbage, Turbo 21, and Turbo Mah Jongg--that let users manipulate the source code. New programmers can easily change graphics, colors, and sounds, add new skill levels, and create new games all while learning how to program in C++. Turbo C++ also contains support for VBX 1.0+ controls, which allow developers to easily add sophisticated functionality to their Windows applications. Turbo C++ provides several free VBX controls, including a deck of cards, dice, gauges, and sliders.

By implementing the latest in ANSI C and C++ standards, including support for templates, exception handling and Run-Time Type Information (RTTI), Turbo C++ delivers the latest C++ technologies. Turbo C++ provides the same critically acclaimed integrated development environment (IDE) found in Borland C++ 4.5, the best selling development system for professional programmers. Designed to enhance programmer productivity, the IDE contains an integrated graphical debugger, BRIEF-based editor, C++ object browser, and a multi-target project manager. Turbo C++ also contains ObjectWindows Library (OWL) 2.5, the latest version of Borland's application framework.

Turbo C++ includes AppExpert and ClassExpert, Borland's critically acclaimed visual programming tools, which make it easy to create new programs. Users simply point and click to select program options such as OLE support, print preview and toolbars. AppExpert generates full source code for the new application, and ClassExpert can be used to easily modify this application by creating new classes, editing existing classes and responding to Windows messages.

Turbo C++ contains Borland's Object Components Framework (OCF), a C++ encapsulation that allows software developers to easily take advantage of OLE 2.0 functionality. OCF works in conjunction with popular application frameworks, including OWL 2.5 and Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) and supports a full range of OLE capabilities. OCF works with existing code, saving time in the development process and easing OLE development.
