FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BORLAND SHIPS DELPHI AND DELPHI CLIENT/SERVER

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. -- March 2, 1995 -- Borland International Inc. announced today it has begun shipping Delphi and Delphi Client/Server, its new award-winning rapid visual application development tools. Both products are now available worldwide from resellers and directly from Borland in English, French, and German.

"We are extremely pleased at the worldwide acceptance of Delphi from our customers, resellers, and ISVs who are supporting and selling the product," said David Watkins, vice president of marketing and support at Borland.

"In the first two weeks that Delphi has been available, sales have doubled our expectations," said Jeff Largiader, vice president of marketing at Programmer's Paradise, the world's leading direct mail supplier of software development tools. "We are extremely pleased with our customers' response and expect the strong sales to continue. Developers are telling us they have been eagerly seeking the performance advancements Delphi provides."

Delphi, a breakthrough high-performance Windows development tool, uniquely combines the power of the world's fastest optimizing native-code compiler, the rapid application development (RAD) benefits of a visual development environment, an object- oriented component-based architecture, and scaleable database technology. Delphi can create applications that run 10 to 20 times faster than older first generation visual development tools, such as PowerSoft's PowerBuilder and Microsoft's Visual Basic Professional.

"Delphi is a breath of fresh air compared to Visual Basic. In fact, our entire production group has committed to buying and using Delphi," said Nicolas Richards, senior systems analyst from Platts, a financial data services unit of McGraw Hill.

"With Delphi the sky is the limit," said James Pham, a software engineer at Jet Propulsion Lab. "I've used Visual Basic and PowerBuilder and Delphi is absolutely a better and more powerful tool. We plan on building some highly technical systems at the JPL with Delphi."

"We have started building applications using the beta and have already ordered many copies of the final shrink-wrapped version," said Philip Herzfeld, Software Development Manager at First Alliance, a leading mortgage company. "We are excited to receive the final version and, if the shipping version turns out to be as stable as the betas have been, we will be migrating all our Visual Basic applications to Delphi."

Delphi was launched in the United States on February 14 at the Software Development show in San Francisco to an audience of over 2,000 attendees, who, at one point during the presentation, gave the product a five minute standing ovation. Many corporate developers have already started to deploy Delphi applications; and more than 1000 trained value added resellers, systems integrators, consultants, and third party vendors are developing Delphi specific products and services.

According to Kim Kokkonenen, president at Turbo Power, a developer of programming add-on tools and components for Delphi, Pascal and C++, "Our business is built around building add-on products for Delphi. Our phone has been ringing off the hook since the Software Development show last month. Delphi's warm reception has greatly boosted our sales."

"We are presently using Delphi for a sales-automation project, which has file-server and client-server requirements. Delphi is perfectly suited for this project," according to Ben Tandowski, president of Professional Computer Solutions, Inc., a consulting firm which recommends and develops mission critical database applications for Fortune 500 companies.

Delphi has already been launched in major cities in Europe and will be showcased at the CeBIT show in Hanover, Germany this month. Delphi is also being unveiled to user groups in thirteen different cities across the United States. A multi-city seminar series will begin in the United States later this month.

Product Information

The Delphi product line consists of two products: Delphi Client/Server, the high-performance rapid application development tool with full Client/Server support; and Delphi, the radical performance windows development tool with local database support. Delphi applications are fully scaleable to the Client/Server version.

Delphi Client/Server features high-performance native/SQL drivers for Oracle, Sybase, Informix, and Borland InterBase; along with team development support, a Visual Query Builder tool, and much more.
