The Secretariat of IOP, at the University of East London's Palaeobiology Research Unit, comprises a group of people interested in past environments and how
their palaeobiology can be investigated. Most of the work is palaeobotanical, and centres around the Plant Fossil Record Database.
This aims to get published records of fossil plants - pollen, seeds, wood, flowers,
leaves, and so on - into a form that computers can search. Using computers to study past environments
is a characteristic common feature of the activities of the research group. Principal Components Analysis and Cluster Analysis
of palynological data, and of semi-quantitative megafossil observations, are other important activities of the group.
