W. Lamersdorf studied computer science at the universities of Munich and Hamburg. After graduating with a doctorate from the University of Hamburg he spent a post-graduate year at the University of Maryland collaborating with the National Bureau of Standards in the field of semantic data models. In 1983 he was invited as a research scientist to the IBM Scientific Centre and the European Networking Centre in Heidelberg. Up to 1990 W. Lamersdorf continued his research in Heidelberg, concentrating on the field of communication support for databases in open systems. In 1986 he was invited to participate in formulating international standards for remote database access for the European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA), for DIN as well as act as German representative in the International Standards Organisation (ISO). In January 1991, he became Professor of Computer Science at the University of Hamburg. The emphasis of his current research lies in the field of databases in open distributed systems.
