About IDOM-Web

The goal of this prototypical network document called IDOM-Web is to improve the communication and technology exchange between European research and development groups with expertise in databases, information retrieval and multi-media.

The skeletal structure of this document is provided by the Network Coordinator in Hamburg who is also responsible for the maintenance of the integrating database services.

This IDOM-Web document (that you are looking at right now) is structured as follows:

How does IDOM-Web work?

Due to the open structure of the underlying World-Wide-Web technology, it is possible for all IDOM nodes to freely add relevant local information resources without perturbing the IDOM-Web topology. Examples of such local information resources are text and graphic documents in various formats, FTP software repositories, full-text indices, database servers and net news groups.

The document can be accessed interactively with browsers available for virtually all Unix workstations, Macs and IBM PCs. The machine on which the browser is executed communicates with the IDOM information servers using the TCP/IP protocol.

Since network documents are downloaded on demand only, it is possible to access IDOM-Web also from small machines with limited storage capacity and processing power. However, some of the documents accessible through IDOM-Web (sounds, movies, high-resolution bitmaps) require additional public domain tools that are currently only available on Unix and Macintosh platforms.
