Abstract: Observed X-ray pulsar profiles are analyzed by fitting to model pulse profiles. A polar-cap emission model for X-rays emitted by accreting neutron stars is constructed using the local X-ray intensity distribution for radiation from a magnetized plasma. Model pulse profiles are computed from the intensity distribution from a filled or annular polar-cap emission region and fitted by least squares to observed pulse profiles of 15 X-ray pulsars. The mean angle between the rotation and magnetic axis is found to be about 24 deg, much smaller than that expected for random orientations. Nine of the 15 X-ray pulsars have profiles which indicate annular shaped polar-cap emission regions.
