More about Me!

Okay, admittedly this is more than a bit self-serving, but since you're being so nosey......

I'm a graduate student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Calgary. My research is centered around the interaction of supernova remnants and the interstellar medium (the gunk between the stars). Here is a list of papers I have published. One version of my resume is available for your amusement.

The above could pretty much define my life, but I'm a bit of a stubborn cuss and as such I insist in having a life outside of university. I'm married, to Susan, but no kids. They will have to wait until I get a job where I can support them (I may be stubborn, but I like to think that I'm not stupid :^).

I tend to spend a lot of my time reading. Mostly science fiction (say, Heinlein, Fredrick Pohl, Roger MacBride Allan), some fantasy (Terry Pratchett), and some "straight" fiction (Jospeh Conrad, Mark Twain). I've recently discovered Hunter S. Thompson, who's style is just too engaging not to read. It's not for the squemish, however. I also am very much into various comics - Doonesbury, Bloom County/Outland, Asterix. As far as written humor goes you can't get much better than Dave Barry.

On the music side of things, my tastes (such as they are) are eclectic. My fav bands are Rush and Pink Floyd, but I also like the Boomtown Rats (and Bob Geldof), The Jim Carroll Band (I know - "who?"), and a number of bands you have never heard of. They all tend to either hard or eclectic rock. A country music fan I am not!

I suppose my politics can be called libertarian. I tend to be "right-wing" on economic issues (who's stupid idea was deficit financing anyhow?), but more "leftish" on personal issues (who cares if you're gay? What difference does it make, and what business is it of mine?). I am fairly big on the rights of people to keep their lives to themselves if they wish, and to say pretty much anything they want. I'm not fond of political-correctness. The worlds a big, bad, nasty thing boys and girls - get used to it.

Susan and I have been bitten by the travel bug. I'm trying to write up blurbs on these trips, but I'm a bit behind and work takes priority (leastways, it does lately). Anyhow, have a look if you are interested.

On the net.side-of-things I'm co-webmaster for the Radio Astronomy Laboratory and the Calgary Unix Users Group (although I've let that slide a bit lately also...). I read the UseNet more than I perhaps should, but limit myself to alt.fan.pratchett, alt.fan.dave_barry, sci.astro and sci.astro.research newsgroups on most days. I'm a bit leary of all the attention the Internet has been getting lately. Not because I don't want the 'Net to grow - I do (I'm longing for the day when I can - in essence - run an X-Term from home using my work computers as the server, and be able to run interactive graphics-intensive applications, and not get angry at the speed (or lack therof)) - but because as more people know about the 'Net, the more people will feel the need to regulate and limit what we can do on and with the 'Net. I love the anarchy - let's not lose it.

Anyhow I've compiled a list of interesting links based on what I like. Follow them if you like.
