WASHINGTON (Reuter) - Rep. Mel Reynolds prepared Friday to announce whether he will resign in the face of his conviction of having sex with a minor and 11 other charges.
The Illinois Democrat planned to announce his decision on CNN's ``Larry King Live,'' where he could reasonably expect to avoid embarrassing questions from reporters. The host of the show has a reputation for asking his guests easy questions.
On Tuesday, the National Organization of Women Tuesday called on Reynolds to resign from Congress.
``He has undermined the trust of the voters who elected him to office and his conviction is incompatible with continued service as a public official. Consequently, Representative Reynolds should immediately resign,'' NOW Vice President Rosemary Dempsey said.
Reynolds, 43, was first elected in 1992 to represent Chicago's South Side in the House.
He was found guilty last week on 12 counts of sexual misconduct including having sex with former campaign volunteer Beverly Heard, who was 16 years old at the time. He faces a minimum four-year jail sentence.
Sentencing has been set for Sept. 12. Reynolds, a father of three, has said he will ask for a new trial or appeal.
