WASHINGTON (Reuter) - An advocate for Sen. Bob Packwood says a woman who accuses Packwood of forcing a kiss on her actually ''was the one making the delivery'' by kissing the Oregon Republican at a reception in 1982.
A lawyer released a deposition Thursday from a woman who asked to remain anonymous says she saw Packwood's accuser kiss him on the lips at a reception for leaders of pro-choice groups in Washington. The incident followed the defeat of a bill, opposed by Packwood, to prevent abortions.
``(She) came into the room, walked briskly over to the senator, threw her arms around him, hugged him and kissed him on the lips and said, 'Thank you for your help,''' the woman said in the deposition.
The woman named in the deposition has said Packwood kissed her in 1981 or 1982 against her wishes.
``She (Packwood's accuser) was the one making the delivery,'' Charles Slepian told reporters. He is helping defend Packwood against charges that the senator made unwanted sexual advances to 19 women over three decades.
Slepian said it was not certain if the kiss at the reception was the disputed kiss.
The allegations include complaints that Packwood grabbed and kissed the women, often sticking his tongue in their mouths, and in one case proposed sex. Packwood has denied some of the charges, but says he cannot remember other incidents because he was drunk at the time.
One of the allegations Packwood has denied has come from a woman who was 17 when she said Packwood tried to kiss her.
Packwood has also been charged with asking lobbyists and businessmen to hire his ex-wife so he would have lower alimony payments and altering his personal diaries, which were later subpoenaed by Senate investigators.
Slepian said the deposition showed the need for public hearings so Packwood could confront his accusers.
Packwood changed his mind last week and asked the Senate Ethics Committee to hold open hearings on the charges after Republicans, including Packwood, voted 52-48 earlier this month against them.
