Report: JFK Jr. Proposed to Girlfriend

NEW YORK (Reuter) - John F. Kennedy Jr., the man dubbed ''America's most eligible bachelor,'' may soon be off the market, the New York Post reported Friday.

The tabloid reported that 34-year-old Kennedy has proposed to Caroline Bessette, his live-in girlfriend since the spring.

``JFK Jr. POPS THE QUESTION, Girlfriend hasn't said yes ... yet!'' the front page headline shouted.

The Post said Bessette threatened to move out of their Manhattan apartment after a story in the gossipy National Enquirer said Kennedy had a ``sizzling secret romance'' with actress Sharon Stone while summering at Martha's Vinyard.

In response, the Post said, Kennedy offered a ring and a marriage proposal, which has not been answered.

``She'll drag it out, to make him sweat,'' friends of Bessette, a 28-year-old public relations executive for Calvin Klein, told the Post. But the Post said friends of the Kennedy clan doubted she could resist the offer. ``What woman would turn down JFK Jr.?'' one asked.

Kennedy has spent his entire life in America's public eye, starting when he accompanied his mother Jacqueline to the funeral of his father, assassinated President John F. Kennedy, in 1963. He recently started a job as the editor of a new political magazine, George.

He has been linked to several actresses including Daryl Hannah, who was said to have drawn his mother's disapproval before she died this year.

The Kennedy family could not be reached for comment.

The Post quoted Kennedy's step-uncle Hugh D. Auchincloss III saying, ``I'm sure Jackie'd be estatic seeing that her son did not pick another Hollywood actress.''
