GOP Outraise Dems More Than Two To One

WASHINGTON (Reuter) - The Republican Party raised more than twice as much money for federal elections in the first half of this year as the Democrats, the Federal Election Commission said Friday.

Its figures, analyzing fund raising and spending by the national committees of the two parties as well as their congressional campaign committees, showed the Republicans in a far healthier financial state than the Democrats.

Republicans raised just over $52 million and spent $43.6 million in the period. Democrats raised $20.4 million and spent $19.6 million.

Republican fund raising increased by 43 percent over the same period in the 1993-94 election cycle. The Democrats registered only a 1 percent increase.

The Republicans finished the period with $9.4 million cash in hand and $1.9 million in debts. The Democrats had $2.4 million in cash but $2.7 million in debts.

Republican fund raising has ballooned since last November's elections when the party won control of both houses of Congress for the first time in 40 years.

Republicans also outraised Democrats by $6 million in ``soft money'' activities -- funds raised outside of federal limits, which cannot be used directly on elections but which can be spent on strengthening party activities in general.
