LONDON (Reuter) - An Irish teenager excitedly taking her first airline flight to Manchester in England ended up marooned in Minsk after taking the wrong plane.
Airport and airline officials Friday launched an inquiry into the bizarre flight path of 18-year-old Anne Keane who flew 2,000 miles off course.
She checked in at Shannon airport in western Ireland on Wednesday for the one-hour flight to Manchester. But then she was mistakenly directed to the Minsk flight at an adjoining gate.
Keane, who was travelling without a passport or visa, was arrested on arrival in Minsk as an illegal immigrant. She was only released when an official from the German airline Lufthansa took pity on her and arranged a free flight home.
A Luftansa spokesman told reporters on Friday: ``Airlines work together, especially at somewhere like Minsk.''
``The poor lady needed a ticket to the West urgently. We felt sorry for the experience she had had and we did everything we could to help her.''
