PARIS (Reuter) - A French appeals court Friday rejected a bid by the international guerrilla ``Carlos the Jackal'' to be released from jail, judicial sources said.
Venezuelan-born Carlos, whose real name is Illich Ramirez Sanchez, denied during the closed-door hearing that he was responsible for the 1982 rue Marbeuf bombing in central Paris. The blast killed one person and injured 63.
Carlos, 45, caught in Sudan in August 1994 and spirited to France, accused Paris Thursday of holding him in jail illegally, without evidence to tie him to the killings and bombings which it accuses him of masterminding.
He complained that he was being treated oppressively in solitary confinement in Fresnes prison near Paris, saying he had even been refused permission to study French.
France's Interior Ministry has accused Carlos of killing 83 people in a string of assassinations and bombings mainly on behalf of leftist and Palestinian groups.
