STERLING FOREST, N.Y. (Reuter) - Researchers at International Business Machines Corp.'s Thomas Watson Laboratory said a new virus found in Microsoft Corp.'s Word software was not as prevelant as common computer viruses and should not alarm computer users.
Earlier this week, a virus, called WordMacro.Concept was discovered infecting Microsoft Word documents and templates. Word is Microsoft's popular word processing software.
IBM researchers determined that the virus is not intentionally destructive and the chances of a typical personal computer becoming infected is currently small.
``During the Michelangelo Virus scare of 1992, people spent huge amounts of time and money looking for a virus that infected comparatively few systems,'' said David Chess, an IBM researcher on Thursday. ``This new virus does not warrant that degree of concern.''
IBM said detection and removal of the virus is comparatively simple.
Microsoft said earlier this week it was distributing a program which eradicates the virus and can prevent future infection. The program is available through Microsoft's support lines and by downloading it from Microsoft's home page on the Internet computer network.
