DETROIT (Reuter) - Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it is recalling about 390,400 of its 1992 and 1993 model Ford Explorer vehicles to correct a problem that could cause the rear liftgate to close unexpectedly.
Ford said in some of the vehicles the brackets that are attached to the liftgate assist cylinders may separate from the liftgates. This could potentially result in a liftgate closing unexpectedly.
There are approximately 390,400 Explorers included in the recall, including 18,300 in Canada, Ford said.
Customers will be notified by first-class mail to return their vehicles to dealers for installation of reinforcements on the brackets. The service will be done without charge to owners and is expect to take less than an hour, Ford said. But dealers may need to keep the vehicles longer to accommodate service schedules.
