PEORIA, Ill. (Reuter) - Police were investigating shootings at the homes of the chief spokesman for Caterpillar Inc. and a company secretary, but said they did not know if they were linked to the 14-month-old strike against the heavy equipment manufacturer.
The home of Keith Butterfield was hit with several shots Wednesday evening while he, his wife and two children were inside, he told police.
The Peoria County Sheriff's Department said Thursday, Butterfield reported two shots hit the room where he was, narrowly missing him. He said shots also struck his garage, damaging two vehicles, and hit another room, striking a personal computer.
In a second incident, a Caterpillar secretary reported that several shots were fired at her home, causing minor damage.
A sheriff's spokesman said no one claimed responibility for the shootings and there was no evidence they were related to the strike.
The United Auto Workers, whose members are on strike, issued a statement from union headquarters in Detroit saying the UAW ''regrets and deplores the shooting incidents ... such actions are completely contrary to the policies of the UAW and the values for which we stand.''
