World's Leading Consumer Products and Communications Companies Adopt MIPS Magic Carpet

AT&T, Philips and Samsung Announce Use of MIPS Magic Carpet Architecture Will Power New Breed of Products; Time Warner Cable Voices Support for Technology

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (May 1, 1995) -- As part of the unveiling of the MIPS® Magic CarpetĀ media processor architecture, the world's leading consumer products and communications companies, AT&T Network Systems, Philips Electronics N.V., Samsung Electronics and Time Warner Cable, each announced their support for Magic Carpet, a new media architecture designed for interactive digital applications. AT&T, Philips and Samsung, plan to use the Magic Carpet architecture in their own next-generation products.

The announcements mean that a broad range of interactive digital products for the home-including set-top devices for interactive television-will soon carry the MIPS Magic Carpet architecture to millions of homes around the world.


AT&T Network Systems to Utilize MIPS Magic Carpet

AT&T Network Systems said today it will incorporate MIPS Magic Carpet into the design implementation for its family of any-media terminals -- interactive multimedia home terminals -- that will pave the way for powerful, reliable, secure and cost-effective networked client/server applications. This will be a key element of AT&T Network Systems' broadband end-to-end capabilities offered to network service and information providers worldwide.

Philips Electronics N.V. Views MIPS Magic Carpet Architecture as a Key Multimedia Technology

Philips Semiconductors, a MIPS architecture licensee, will use the Magic Carpet architecture as the common core element in future multimedia applications.

"We view MIPS Magic Carpet as a strategic component in our technology roadmap for multimedia systems," said Henk Bodt, executive vice president of Philips Electronics N.V. "We are excited to be a partner of Silicon Graphics in the digital multimedia revolution."


Samsung Electronics to Manufacture MIPS Magic Carpet Set-Top Boxes

Today, Samsung Electronics announced that it will manufacture set-top boxes based on the MIPS Magic Carpet media architecture.

"We are pleased to partner with MIPS Technologies to incorporate the MIPS Magic Carpet media architecture in our next generation of set-top boxes," said K. C. Kim, vice president and general manager, Center for Multimedia R&D and Business Promotion for Samsung Electronics. "The combination of Silicon Graphics digital media technology and MIPS RISC processor power will enable a new level of entertainment for consumers."


Time-Warner Supports MIPS Magic Carpet Technology

In addition, Time Warner Cable announced its support of the MIPS Magic Carpet as the basis for deployable interactive digital television set-tops "MIPS Magic Carpet will provide all of the key elements to deliver powerful, flexible and affordable set-tops," said James Chiddix, senior vice president of engineering and technology, Time Warner Cable. "Set-tops based on Magic Carpet will allow the industry to carry forth its vision of delivering truly interactive and compelling ITV experiences."
