On January 12, 1995, Silicon Graphics, Inc introduced Indy Modeler(tm) systems, an addition to its SiliconWorks(tm) manufacturing solution set that offers engineers affordable access to solids-based design. These two new Indy Modeler configurations combine Silicon Graphics' leadership in solids modeling with its powerful digital media and collaboration software delivering the industry's most powerful, comprehensive and scalable low-cost modeling platform.
Available for a limited time, these new systems include specially bundled collaborative software tools and a 20-inch color monitor. Silicon Graphics' Indy Modeler systems are designed specifically for the emerging mid-range solids market, offering desktop designers access to the performance and features traditionally available only on more costly workstations. Indy Modeler systems build upon Silicon Graphics' reputation and established position in solids modeling.
"Until now, design engineers have had to choose between slow personal computers and more expensive workstations," noted Charles Foundyller, president, Daratech, Inc., a leading market research firm specializing in CAD/CAM. "To be productive, even junior engineers need high-performance iron. With the addition of the Indy Modeler systems, Silicon Graphics has made high-performance RISC systems, as well as the full range of its design technology, accessible to engineers on all levels."The Indy priced Indy Modeler PC system bundle enables design engineers to work easily with models currently compromised by personal computer capacity. The Indy Modeler SC system bundle readily manipulates highly complex designs. Each system is based on Silicon Graphics' Indy 133MHz R4600(tm) system with a 1GB disk, 32Mb of memory and a 20-inch color monitor. Both bundles include a connectivity and collaboration package with over $2,000 worth of hardware and software options including NFS, a 20Mb Floptical disk drive for Macintosh(r) and personal computer media sharing, InPerson(tm) desktop conferencing and whiteboarding software, and the IRIS Annotator (tm) 3D on-line design review package."Desktop designers challenged us to offer a low-cost system with the power to perform," said Tom Jermoluk, Silicon Graphics president and chief operating officer. "With the Indy Modeler systems, we have reduced the price of admission to serious CAD design -- not just with lower-cost hardware and software, but with a complete and powerful CAD design environment."
Standard with all Silicon Graphics systems are the Indigo Magic(tm) user environment and a full suite of digital media tools including the Showcase(tm) presentation package and Media Mail(tm) electronic mail system. Designers may also easily import models into the above listed collaboration tools through Silicon Graphics' Inventor(tm) file format for cross-platform collaboration through shared 3D models. For seamless access to the Inventor format, several leading CAD applications feature built-in menu selection buttons.
The Indy Modeler system bundles are available immediately, with initial pricing available through June 30, 1995.
Silicon Graphics' design environment includes an extensive feature set, multitasking capabilities, the industry's highest-capacity system bandwidth, binary-compatible products with the Indy desktop system, through the POWER Onyx(tm) and POWER Challenge(tm) supercomputer and server lines. With all systems based upon the company's IRIX(tm) operating system, Silicon Graphics enables a cohesive product development path from modeling through rendering, analysis and validation. Users may also easily integrate Silicon Graphics technology through seamless connectivity with Macintosh, personal computer and other productivity systems.
