Mr Bouraam had been strolling on the Seine quai as supporters of the Front National party crossed the Pont du Carrousel on May Day, Monday. Three 'skinheads' detached themselves from the parade and caused Mr Bouraam to fall into the Seine, where he drowned.
The radio news station France-Info reported this morning that police had made sweeps on known skinhead hangouts and had taken several dozen into custody for questioning. This evening several were still being questioned.
Jean-Marie Le Pen, president of the Front National party, said tonight he is going to vote 'blanc' this coming Sunday. This means that he will choose neither candidate, leaving his ballot blank. That choice gives his supporters four choices: abstention, a vote 'blanc', or a vote for either of the two candidates.
Since it is estimated that a lot of the National Front's supporters are disaffected ex-communists or socialists, if they vote at all; it will probably be for Lionel Jospin. 'Blanc' could be interpreted as white and hard-core supporters could throw their votes to Jacques Chirac, or they could abstain like their leader.
