Place de la Concorde; Obélisque de Luxor

Where: Place de la Concorde, 8th Arrondissement.
Métro stop: Concorde.

History

In the center of the Place de la Concorde stands the 3,300 year old Obelisk of Luxor. The square itself was laid out by Louis XV and its center originally was graced by an equestrian statue of the same. Work on the square began in 1755 and ended in 1775.

During the Revolution, the statue of Louis XV was replaced by an allegorical statue of Liberty, and few metres away stood the guillotine. On Sunday, 21 January 1793 Louis XVI was executed here. All told 1,343 people were beheaded in what was then called Place de la Révolution. Among these was Marie-Antoinette. Renamed Place de la Concorde in 1795, the central statue was replaced with the Obelisk of Luxor.
