Examples: Search for Images Using Text Expressions
Many interesting searches can be accomplished by entering a simple expression
into the Any Text Field text window.
Here are a few more complicated examples:
- Search for items applicable to Belgium by entering the string:
- Belgi*
in the text window labeled Any Text Field.
This will match words such as Belgium, Belgian,
Belgians, Belgica, and Belgique.
- Search for items pertinent to diabetes by entering the string:
- diabet*
in the text window labeled Any Text Field.
This will match diabetes, diabetic,
diabetology, etc.
- Find images dealing with the Civil War-era President of the United
States by entering
- Abra* Abe
in the Any Text Field text window, and
- Lincoln
in the Name Field(s) text window.
- Find caricatures by the French artist Daumier by entering the string
- caricatur*
in the Any Text Field text window, and
- Daumier
in the text window labeled Name Field(s).
Using caricatur* instead of caricature
catches the plural form, caricatures, as well as the singular.
- Find material dealing with nursing in Europe by selecting
Europe in the geographical locator list,
and typing
- nurs*
in the Any Text Field text window.
If you are interested in nursing in France,
you will obtain better results by typing
- nurs* and France
in the Any Text Field text window.
- Find images dealing with aerial forms of patient evacuation by entering
- evacuation and air*
into the Any Text Field window.
- To find images relating to air quality and automobiles,
enter the string
- air and automobile*
into the Any Text Field window.
The expression and is interpreted here as a Boolean operation between
the pair of words it connects.
- Find images of aircraft by entering
- airplan* *plane
into the Any Text Field window.
- Find images dealing with railroad transportation by entering
the string
- train trains
into the Any Text Field window.
Using the Title/Abstract field instead will slightly
reduce the number of matches.
We did not use train*here,
to avoid matching images dealing with topics such as training.
- Locate images dealing with the Public Health Service ("Marine")
Hospital in San Francisco by entering
- public phs marine and "san francisco"
into the Any Text Field window.
Due to the rules governing the parsing of text expressions,
this is equivalent to the Boolean expression
- (public or phs or marine) and "san francisco".
This search takes advantage of knowing that the Public Health Service Hospital
was known as the marine hospital for much of its life, and that the initials
of the Public Health Service ar P.H.S.
