Can Internet be wrapped?
The wrapped-art oeuvre of Christo and Jeanne-Claude seeks to accentuate an
object's concrete qualities and contrast with the widely-lamented disappearance
of immediacy which is mostly blamed on electronic media. The wrapping of large
objects such as buildings and elements of landscape renders them more tangible
and heightens our perception of them. In fact, Internet is itself a rather
large object. In contrast to large buildings, islands or valleys, here one is
concerned with something impossible to walk round or observe, even from a great
distance. And because Internet eludes all attempts at external contemplation,
its young protagonists see it as the perfect example of a disembodied and
insubstantial medium, the first true manifestation of cyberspace.
We would like now to present you with the challenge of developing an idea, that is, a concept or project outline of how one could wrap Internet. Please
send us your suggestions with the following form. We will set up here a pool of ideas on "Internet wrapping", where the incoming project outlines and subsequent related comments and suggested changes can be published. Virus programs and other such unimaginative ideas will, of course, not be considered. Suggestions for wrapping Internet should reach this spot before July 10. 1995, so they can be
put into practice during the Reichstag wrapping.
