CLAIBORNE ENRICHMENT CENTER:

De Facto Nuke Dump?

THE THREAT: Louisiana Energy Services (LES), a consortium of European and American nuclear industries, has plans to build a uranium enrichment plant between Forest Grove and Center Springs, two rural, impoverished communities 50 miles from Shreveport.

TOXIC RADIOACTIVE WASTE WITH NOWHERE TO GO: The proposed plant will produce over 4,000 tons of radioactive toxic waste annually-adding up to an estimated 100,000 tons during the plant's thirty year life. Some residents fear that the radioactive waste will be stored on site at the plant because there is no known means of permanent and safe disposal of this waste. If LES is permitted to construct and operate this enrichment plant, Forest Grove and Center Springs will become de facto toxic dumping grounds for radioactive waste.

NO NEED FOR ENRICHED URANIUM: The enriched uranium produced by the plant is used in civilian nuclear reactors, but there is no need for another plant to create enriched uranium as there has not been a proposal for a new reactor in over 15 years.

protestRESPONDING TO THE THREAT: When the citizens of Forest Grove and Center Springs learned that they had been targeted to host the proposed plant they organized as CANT, (Citizens Against Nuclear Trash). Since 1989, CANT has fought to prevent the construction of this dangerous nuclear facility.

Join the Battle for Environmental Justice!

THE DECISION IS NEAR: In March of 1995, a three judge panel form the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) heard testimony about the nuclear facility proposed between the African American communities of Forest Grove and Center Springs, in northern Louisiana.

Opponents argued that the siting is another example of environmental racism - a shameful pattern of dumping America's hazardous wastes in low income communities of color.

The NRC judges are now in the process of making their final decision on whether or not to grant a license to LES. DON'T LET THE NRC MAKE ITS DECISION WITHOUT PUBLIC OPINION. ACT NOW!

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!

STOP LOUISIANA ENERGY SERVICES

We have the power to prevent yet another low income community of color from being targeted as a toxic dumping ground and to stop another unneeded plant from contaminating our land, air, and water.
