It was founded in 1992 by merging the employees and activities of two previous institutes. ISA is located in the center of Sankt Augustin (Rathausallee) six kilometers away from the GMD headquarters at Schloss Birlinghoven.
ISA works in the areas of software engineering, network engineering, logistics for multimedia information, and support for telecooperation. In the problems it handles, it is user-driven; this means that the R&D activities of ISA are oriented to solving problems arising in practice. At present the institute has 85 employees, about 50 of which have a masters degree.
ISA is currently organized in three R&D departments:
