Edmonton, Alberta

The capital of Alberta, Edmonton boasts of a rich history as the "Gateway to the North", celebrated each year in it's "Klondike Days" (July 21-30, 1994) celebration. Styling itself as "The City of Champions", Edmonton is home to a number of professional sports teams with a distinguished history of winning.

What to See

Edmonton is home to a number of interesting visitor sites, including the Edmonton Space and Science centre (home to laser shows and an IMAX theatre), Fort Edmonton Park (a restored pioneer village and replica of the Hudson's Bay Company fort, built in 1846), the Muttart conservatory (four pyramid shaped greenhouses), the Provincial Museum of Alberta, and West Edmonton Mall. This latter site is a $1.1 billion shopping and amusement complex with more than 800 shops, 11 major department stores, 34 movie theatres and 110 eating places. Fantasyland (not associated with Disney, who sued and won for trademark infringment BTW, but the name is still in use) is the amusement park with rides such as a submarine ride and the worlds largest metal rollercoaster (all indoor). Also in West Edmonton Mall is the World Waterpark with waterslides, waterrides and a wavepool. An NHL size ice-rink is also part of the mall, as is an indoor lake with a submarine ride and dolphin show.

Edmonton can be called the City of Festivals without too much exageration, as it is home to Klondike Days, Heritage Days, the Folk Music Festival, the Fringe Arts festival, and Jazz City.

Of course, no trip to Edmonton would be complete without seeing the Alberta Goverment buildings with their beautifully landscaped parks.
